What was at stake.
The city announced the opening at groundbreaking. The library had custom shelving, a reading room skylight and a large art program, each with its own long lead time. Nobody had tied them to the opening.
How we controlled it.
What our schedulers and cost engineers did on this project.
Long leads tied
Skylight glazing, shelving and art installations were scheduled from shop drawings to install, tied to the rooms they served.
Collection move planned
Moving the book collection was scheduled as real work in front of the opening, not left to the last week.
Change tracked
Design changes from public input were priced and logged, so the council saw their true cost.
Plain reporting
A one-page monthly report told the council what changed and why.
The result.
A public opening date is a promise from a city to its people. We treated it that way.
